Pappammal, a 110-year-old DMK pioneer and recent Periyar Award recipient, passed away. CM Stalin mourns the loss of the dedicated party worker and Padma Shri awardee, remembering her contributions to agriculture and women's empowerment.

Coimbatore: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pappammal, a 110-year-old DMK pioneer and recent recipient of the Periyar Award at the party's Mupperum Vizha held on the 17th.

Pappammal was a devoted follower of Perarignar Anna and Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar, dedicating herself to the party since its inception. She actively participated in various protests, from the anti-Hindi imposition movement in 1965 to the recent opposition against NEET examinations for the welfare of Tamil Nadu students.

Her political career began in 1959 when she was elected as a member of the Thekkampatti Panchayat. She later served as a member of the Karamadai Panchayat Union Committee in 1964 and as the Vice President of the Thekkampatti Panchayat Council.

For 45 years, starting from 1970, Pappammal served as a member of the Farmers' Discussion Group at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. She was also the president of the Women's Association since 1965, working towards the advancement of rural women.

Pappammal remained actively involved in agricultural work until her last breath. In recognition of her life and service, the Union Government awarded her the Padma Shri in 2021. At that time, CM Stalin praised her as "an inspiration to us all with her enthusiasm, ideological fervor, and ever-present smile."

During the recent DMK Mupperum Vizha, Stalin had lauded Pappammal as "the identity of entire Tamil Nadu.

" Expressing his grief, he stated, "Every moment I spent conversing with Pappammal at Anna Arivalayam and my residence will forever remain fresh in my memory."

The Chief Minister conveyed his deepest condolences to Pappammal's family, relatives, and party members, saying he was grieving as if he had lost a member of his own family.
