Slum Clearance Board worker alleges death threats, wage theft in petition to District Collector

A Coimbatore resident petitioned the District Collector, claiming unpaid wages and death threats from a contractor of the Slum Clearance Board. The incident has sparked protests and allegations of caste discrimination.

Coimbatore: A resident of Keeranatham area in Coimbatore has submitted a petition to the District Collector's office, alleging unpaid wages and death threats from a contractor of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

Kalimuthu, in his petition, stated that contractor Kuppuraj had failed to pay his wages for work done at the Slum Clearance Board's North Keeranatham project. He accused the contractor of fraud and issuing death threats when asked for payment. Kalimuthu also mentioned that the electricity connection to his Slum Clearance Board residence had been cut off, affecting his children's education. He requested a proper investigation and action on his complaint.

The incident has escalated, with Ilangovan, a member of the Kongu Nadu Arunthathiyar Munnetra Peravai accompanying Kalimuthu, staging a dharna in front of the District Collector's office. Ilangovan claimed he was attacked by an auto driver from Keeranatham, allegedly instigated by officials against whom he had filed complaints of corruption in the Slum Clearance Board. He also accused the attackers of caste-based discrimination.

Ilangovan announced an indefinite hunger strike, demanding action against the accused. He stated that despite filing complaints, no action had been taken against the culprits, leading to the protest which caused significant commotion at the Collector's office.

The incident has brought to light alleged irregularities in the Slum Clearance Board and raised concerns about the safety and fair treatment of workers and whistleblowers. As the situation unfolds, local authorities are expected to investigate the multiple allegations of fraud, threats, and caste-based discrimination.
