Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police have arrested two individuals under the Goondas Act for smuggling 5.5 tons of ration rice to Kerala. The arrests were made following a seizure operation near Karamadai on August 20, 2024.

During a routine check on the road leading to Chinna Thottipalayam - Gandhi Nagar near Karamadai, the Civil Supplies CID police discovered 5.5 tons of ration rice hidden in a godown. The police immediately seized the rice and registered a case against the suspects.

The two individuals arrested in connection with the smuggling operation were identified as Murugalingam (39) from Nanguner in Nellai district and Sudhakar (29) from Palathurai, Coimbatore. They were initially presented before the court and remanded to the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Following their arrest, Inspector Rajakumar recommended to District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati that the accused be detained under the Goondas Act, citing their repeated involvement in ration rice smuggling activities.

Acting on this recommendation, Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati issued orders to take action against Murugalingam and Sudhakar under the Goondas Act. A copy of this order was subsequently served to the accused in prison.

The District Collector has issued a stern warning, stating that strict action will be taken against those involved in smuggling and selling ration rice meant for the poor. This case highlights the authorities' commitment to cracking down on the illegal trade of subsidized goods intended for economically disadvantaged citizens.
