Water Release into Thirumoorthy Dam via Contour Canal Delights Farmers

Water released from PAP complex reservoirs into Thirumoorthy Dam through Contour Canal, bringing joy to farmers awaiting second zone irrigation. Public Works Department officials announce plans for further irrigation.

Coimbatore: Farmers in the Udumalpet region of Tiruppur district are rejoicing as water has been released into the Thirumoorthy Dam through the Contour Canal, marking the beginning of the second zone irrigation.

The Thirumoorthy Dam, located near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district, serves as a crucial water source for approximately 4 lakh acres of agricultural lands in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. With the completion of the first zone irrigation, farmers have been eagerly awaiting water for the second zone.

Public Works Department officials have announced that water from the PAP (Parambikulam Aliyar Project) complex reservoirs, which serve as the primary water source for Thirumoorthy Dam, was released yesterday evening through the Contour Canal. The water reached the dam by last night, flowing at a rate of 523 cubic feet per second.

Maintenance work had been ongoing for several weeks in the Nallar area of the Contour Canal, where a section had been left unattended. With the completion of these repairs, the water release has brought relief to the farming community.

Officials stated that once the Thirumoorthy Dam reaches the required water level, they will initiate the release of water for the second zone irrigation. Currently, the dam's water level stands at 28.47 feet out of its total capacity of 60 feet.

The timely release of water has instilled a sense of optimism among farmers in the region, who are now looking forward to a productive agricultural season.
