Silambam Competition Showcases Tamil Martial Art Skills in Coimbatore

The first annual Silambam competition was held at Government High School in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, featuring various age groups and categories, attracting over 250 participants from schools and training centers.


Coimbatore: The Government High School in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, recently hosted the first annual Silambam competition, organized jointly by Tamilarin Silambam Kalaikoodam and Silambam Self-Defense Art Research Training Center. The event showcased the ancient Tamil martial art form and attracted participants from various age groups.

The competition was divided into four age categories: 6-8 years, 8-12 years, 12-14 years, and 14-18 years. Participants competed in various divisions including Otthakambu (single stick), Irattai Kambu (double stick), Velkambu (spear), Vaal (sword), and Surulvaal (flexible sword), demonstrating their unique skills in each category.



Thangamani, Assistant Professor at Maruthi College of Physical Education, welcomed the participants and guests at the inaugural ceremony. Special guests Supreme Court Advocate Arivazagan, Deputy Commissioner of the Legal Division at Madurai High Court Branch, and Sinduja, Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence from Salem, inaugurated the event.

Supreme Grand Master Arunachalam Mani, Asan Kumar, founder of Tamilarin Silambam Kalaikoodam, Asan Sulaim, founder of Kerala Mamangam Kalari Kendra, and Madhusudan and Saravanan from Tamilarin Silambam Kalaikoodam were present at the occasion. Albert, President of the World Silambam Sports Association, Ooty, delivered a special address.



The competition saw participation from over 250 athletes representing government and private schools, as well as Silambam training centers in Coimbatore. Krishnan, Gopal, Rangasamy, Ramabalan, Anandakumar, Muthupandi, and Rema served as judges for the various events.

Prizes were awarded to the winners of each round. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Physical Education Teacher Dhanakumar, marking a successful celebration of this traditional Tamil martial art form.
