Coimbatore: Three men were arrested on Wednesday for impersonating police officers and robbing a priest at the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand in Coimbatore. The incident occurred on August 2 when the victim, Nithyanandam (44), a temple priest from Chinna Karumbalam in Coonoor, Nilgiris district, was standing near the public toilet at the bus stand.

The accused, who arrived in an auto-rickshaw, approached Nithyanandam claiming to be police officers. They asked to inspect his bag and during the search, stole Rs 10,000 from it. The trio then told the priest to come to the nearby police station for an explanation before fleeing in their auto-rickshaw.

Nithyanandam filed a complaint with the Kattur Police Station. Sub-Inspector Palanisamy registered a case and arrested three suspects: Karthik (29) from Puliakkulam, Jothiraj (21) from Madurai, and Sheikh Abdullah (21). The police recovered the stolen Rs 10,000 from the accused.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Karthik worked as an auto-rickshaw driver, while Jothiraj was employed as a parotta master at a hotel in Coimbatore. The case highlights the importance of public awareness and the need to verify the identity of individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers.
