Coimbatore Residents Pay Tribute to Wayanad Disaster Victims

On August 2, residents of Sivaji Colony in Coimbatore held a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of the Wayanad landslide. The event, organized by a social welfare group, saw participation from various community members.


Coimbatore: In a show of solidarity with the victims of the devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, residents of Sivaji Colony in Coimbatore came together to pay their respects. The somber event took place on August 2, as the death toll from the disaster surpassed 300.

The candlelight vigil was organized by the "Anaithu Samuga Makkalukum Udhavum Peravai" (Assembly to Help All Communities) under the leadership of lawyer Pushpanantham. Participants lit candles and offered floral tributes to the photographs of the deceased, expressing their condolences and praying for the souls of the departed.

The disaster in Wayanad, caused by heavy rains, has led to widespread destruction in various areas. Rescue operations have been ongoing for the fourth consecutive day, with efforts to locate and save those still trapped under the debris.

The event in Coimbatore saw participation from a diverse group of community members. Notable attendees included lawyers Tamizhalagan and Lakshmi, as well as Divya, Jeba, Varsha Varshini, Mohan Raja, Jeyamani, Muthu, Gnanamani, Kumar, Dhanalakshmi, and Kovilmedu Balakrishnan, among others.

This gesture from the Coimbatore residents highlights the spirit of unity and compassion that transcends state borders during times of tragedy. As Kerala continues to grapple with the aftermath of the landslide, such acts of solidarity serve as a reminder of the shared humanity that binds communities together in times of crisis.
