Severe Flood in Pambaru River, Major Catchment Area of Amaravathi Dam; Surplus Water Released

Heavy rains in Amaravathi Dam's catchment areas led to severe flooding in Pambaru River. Officials released surplus water as the dam neared capacity, issuing warnings to nearby villages.

Coimbatore: The Pambaru River, a major catchment area of the Amaravathi Dam near Udumalaipettai in Tiruppur district, is experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rainfall since last night. The downpour has affected key catchment areas including Pambaru, Thoovanam, and Kandalur.

As a result of the intense flooding at Maraiyur Kovil Kadavu area of Pambaru River, the water inflow to Amaravathi Dam has significantly increased to 4,047 cubic feet per second. The dam's current water level stands at 88.52 feet, against its full capacity of 90 feet.

Considering the dam's safety, authorities have begun releasing surplus water through the main sluice gates at a rate of 4,298 cubic feet per second. The Public Works Department has issued a warning to residents of more than 50 villages along the riverbanks, including Kallapuram, Rudra Palayam, Kolumam, Madathukulam, and Karathozhuvu, urging them to move to safer locations.

The continuous rainfall in the catchment areas has prompted officials to remain vigilant. They are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both the dam and the nearby communities.
