Coimbatore: A 26-year-old man has been arrested by the Ukkadam police for sexually harassing and threatening a 28-year-old woman in Coimbatore. The incident has shed light on the persistent issue of women's safety in the city.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, originally resided on Palakkad Main Road in Kuniyamuthur near Coimbatore. Despite being married, she had been living separately in a house in the residential area of Vincent Road, Ukkadam, due to differences with her husband.

During this period, the woman befriended the 26-year-old accused. Initially, their relationship was platonic, with the woman considering him a friend. However, it is alleged that the young man took advantage of their friendship and began misbehaving with her. Distressed by his actions, the woman distanced herself from him.

Undeterred, the accused persistently called her on her mobile phone, pressuring her to stay with him. The situation escalated when the accused confronted the woman while she was talking to a female friend. He allegedly slapped her on the cheek and threatened her.

Following this incident, the victim filed a complaint with the Ukkadam police. Sub-Inspector Vignesh and his team promptly acted on the complaint. They registered a case against the young man under the Women's Protection Act for defaming the young woman, issuing threats, and causing disturbance.

The accused was subsequently arrested on July 28th. This swift action by the police underscores their commitment to addressing crimes against women and ensuring the safety of female residents in Coimbatore.
