Anna Market Traders Petition for Allocation of Renovated Shops to Existing Vendors

Anna Market traders in Coimbatore petition District Collector, requesting renovated shops be allocated to existing vendors. They oppose the Corporation's decision to auction shops, citing verbal assurances given earlier.

Coimbatore: The Anna Market All Traders Association in Coimbatore has submitted a petition to the District Collector, urging the allocation of renovated shops to existing vendors who previously operated businesses in the market located on Mettupalayam Road.

In their petition, the traders stated that out of 476 shops in Anna Market, renovation work was planned to be carried out in four phases. They claimed that verbal assurances were given that the renovated shops would be allocated only to those who previously had shops there. However, the traders expressed concern over a recent resolution passed by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to auction off a section of the renovated shops to the public.

The association pointed out that this decision contradicts the verbal assurances given earlier. They also mentioned their willingness to pay the fees set by the Corporation for the shops. The traders emphasized their readiness to comply with the financial requirements and appealed to the authorities to allocate the shops to the existing vendors who have been conducting business in the market for years.

The petition highlights the traders' concerns about losing their livelihoods if the shops are auctioned to new bidders. They argue that as long-standing vendors, they should be given priority in the allocation of the renovated shops. The association hopes that the District Collector will intervene and ensure that the verbal commitment made to them is honored, preserving their right to continue their businesses in the renovated Anna Market.
