Petition Seeking Permission for Weekly Market in Coimbatore

Residents of Gandhi Ma Nagar in Coimbatore's 25th ward submitted a petition to the District Collector, seeking permission to continue their decade-old weekly market, crucial for 300 families' livelihoods.


Coimbatore: Residents of Gandhi Ma Nagar in Coimbatore's 25th ward approached the District Collector with a petition, seeking permission to continue their weekly market. The market, which has been operating for the past 10 years every Thursday evening, is now facing closure due to the Coimbatore Corporation's refusal to allow its continuation.

According to the petitioners, the Corporation officials have designated the area as a playground and are now preventing the market from being set up. They claim that fences have been erected to prevent the market's operation, directly impacting the livelihoods of about 300 families in the area.



The residents emphasized that the weekly market has been a crucial source of income for many vulnerable groups, including abandoned wives, widows, and differently-abled individuals. They urged the District Collector to grant the necessary permission to continue the market, stressing its importance in sustaining their livelihoods.

The petitioners appealed to the authorities to consider the socio-economic impact of closing the market and requested immediate intervention to protect their means of earning a living. They hope that the administration will recognize the market's significance to the local community and take appropriate action to allow its continuation.
