College student arrested for harassing Plus 2 girl in Coimbatore

A 22-year-old college student was arrested in Coimbatore for harassing a 17-year-old Plus 2 student. He impersonated a girl online, befriended the victim, and later stalked her, causing distress.

Coimbatore: A 22-year-old college student named Junaith was arrested in Coimbatore for harassing a 17-year-old Plus 2 student. The incident unfolded in the Kuniyamuthur area of Coimbatore, where the victim, the daughter of a local businessman, was studying in 12th standard.

The girl, who was active on social media platforms like Snapchat, received a friend request from what appeared to be another girl a few months ago. She accepted the request and began chatting with the person, believing it to be a female friend. The impersonator even used a feminine voice during voice calls, which dispelled any suspicions the victim might have had.

After some time, the person revealed his true identity as Junaith, a 22-year-old college student, and professed his love for the girl. Shocked by this revelation, the school student stopped communicating with him. However, Junaith began stalking the girl, waiting for her on her way to school and other places, causing her significant distress.

On July 22, Junaith was seen standing in front of the girl's house. When the girl's father came out and approached him to inquire about his presence, Junaith attempted to flee. In his haste, he dropped his mobile phone. The girl's father picked up the phone and was shocked to find his daughter's photos on it.

When confronted, Junaith threatened the girl's father. Following this incident, the father filed a complaint at the Kuniyamuthur Police Station on July 24. Based on the complaint, the police arrested Junaith and registered a case against him under three sections, including charges related to death threats and the Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

The incident has raised concerns about online safety and the importance of vigilance while using social media platforms, especially for minors.
