Supreme Court of India Changes Working Hours from August 1, 2024

The Supreme Court of India has announced a change in its working hours, effective from August 1, 2024. The new timings will be from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, as per the amended Supreme Court Rules, 2013.

Coimbatore: The Supreme Court of India has officially announced a significant change in its working hours, set to take effect from August 1, 2024. This modification comes as part of amendments made to the Supreme Court Rules, 2013.

According to the notification, the Chief Justice of India, exercising powers conferred by sub-rule (3) of Rule 4, Order II of Supreme Court Rules, 2013, has approved the amendments. The most notable change is the shift in the court's working hours, which will now be from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, subject to any orders by the Chief Justice.

The amended rules also specify that the offices of the Court will remain closed on holidays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. During court vacations and holidays, the offices will remain open for durations as directed by the Chief Justice.

These changes are part of a broader amendment to the Supreme Court Rules, 2013. The existing Rules 1, 2, and 3 of Order II have been substituted with new provisions that reflect these updated working hours and closure schedules.

The decision to change the working hours is expected to have a significant impact on the functioning of the Supreme Court and may influence the schedules of lawyers, litigants, and court staff. It remains to be seen how this change will affect the overall efficiency and case management in India's apex court.

Legal experts and court observers will be keenly watching how this transition unfolds and its effects on the judicial system. The Supreme Court's decision to implement these changes well in advance - nearly a year before they take effect - allows ample time for all stakeholders to adjust their schedules and practices accordingly.
