MLA Vanathi Srinivasan Urges Relocation of Ukkadam Fish Market for Housing Project

Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan requests Minister K.N. Nehru to relocate Ukkadam fish market and hand over the land to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for constructing houses promised to displaced residents.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has appealed to K.N. Nehru, Minister for Municipal Administration, to take necessary actions to relocate the Ukkadam fish market and hand over the land to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board. The request was made on July 23, highlighting the plight of displaced residents awaiting promised housing.

The issue dates back to 2018 when residents of the CMC Colony in Ukkadam, who had been working as sanitation workers for many years, were relocated to facilitate the construction of the Ukkadam flyover. At that time, authorities promised to build 520 houses within 18 months after removing the fish market from the area. The residents' homes were demolished, and they were provided temporary accommodation in Coimbatore's Pullukadu area.

However, four years have passed, and the fish market has not been relocated. As a result, the affected residents continue to live without proper housing, facing numerous hardships.

Vanathi Srinivasan emphasized the urgency of the matter, requesting the Minister to give immediate attention to this issue. She urged for swift action to relocate the fish market and hand over the land to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, enabling the construction of the promised houses for the displaced residents.

The MLA's appeal highlights the need for the government to fulfill its commitment to the affected families and address the housing concerns of the displaced community in Ukkadam.
