Over 100 Residents Stage Road Blockade Near Udumalpet Demanding Regular Water Supply

More than 100 residents of Kondampatti panchayat blocked Tiruppur road near Udumalpet with empty pots, demanding regular water supply. The protest disrupted traffic for over an hour.

Coimbatore: Residents of Kondampatti panchayat in Gudimangalam union, near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district, staged a road blockade on Monday, demanding regular water supply to their area. More than 100 protesters, mostly women, carrying empty pots blocked the Udumalpet-Tiruppur main road, causing traffic disruption for over an hour.

The Kondampatti panchayat, home to over 500 families, has been facing irregular water supply for the past few weeks. The area, which previously received water through the Thirumoorthy Dam Combined Drinking Water Scheme, has been experiencing severe water shortages lately.

Residents claim that despite submitting multiple petitions to the panchayat administration, Gudimangalam union officials, and the water supply department, no action has been taken to address their grievances. Frustrated by the lack of response, the villagers decided to stage the protest.

The blockade was lifted temporarily after Panchayat President Kalaichelvi, Gudimangalam Police Inspector Geetha, and officials from the union and water supply department arrived at the scene. They assured the protesters that immediate steps would be taken to supply water to the area on the same day.

However, the residents warned that they would resume their protest if regular water supply is not restored. They emphasized their determination to continue with sustained demonstrations until their demands are met.

The incident highlights the growing water scarcity issues in rural areas and the urgent need for local authorities to address such basic amenities promptly.
