Elderly Woman in Coimbatore Seeks Permission for Euthanasia or Suicide Over Alleged Police Inaction

A 70-year-old woman from Coimbatore petitioned the District Collector, seeking permission for euthanasia or suicide due to alleged police inaction in a gold theft case. The incident occurred during a weekly grievance redressal meeting.

Coimbatore: In a shocking turn of events, a 70-year-old woman from Coimbatore has petitioned the District Collector, seeking permission for euthanasia or suicide, citing alleged police inaction in a case of gold theft. The incident unfolded during the weekly grievance redressal meeting held at the Collector's office on Monday, July 22.

The elderly woman, identified as Vasantha from K.G. Bose Nagar in Coimbatore, submitted a petition detailing her ordeal. According to her statement, she was allegedly defrauded of 14 sovereigns of gold jewelry by Vimala Keerthi and four others. Vasantha claimed to have filed a complaint at the Singanallur Police Station regarding this matter.

In her petition, Vasantha alleged that while the police registered a case based on her complaint, they failed to conduct a proper investigation. She further accused the police of attempting to help the accused escape. Vasantha stated that a charge sheet was filed in court that favored the accused.

Seeking action against the police officers allegedly involved in this misconduct, Vasantha said she had filed a complaint at the City Police Commissioner's office on February 10. However, she lamented that no action had been taken on her complaint to date.

The petitioner claimed that even after the City Police Commissioner personally summoned and warned the Singanallur Police Station officials to take action, no steps were taken. Expressing her loss of faith in obtaining justice, Vasantha requested the District Collector to permit her to opt for euthanasia or suicide.

This incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the grievance redressal system and the alleged lapses in police investigation procedures in Coimbatore.
