Villagers Near Udumalaipet Protest with Empty Pots, Detain Government Bus Demanding Water Supply

Residents of Kuttiyagoundanur village near Udumalaipet held a road blockade and detained a government bus, demanding proper water supply after 15 days of shortage. The protest disrupted traffic on the Udumalaipet main road.

Coimbatore: In a dramatic protest over water scarcity, villagers near Udumalaipet in Tirupur district detained a government bus and staged a road blockade with empty pots, demanding immediate action to address their water supply issues.

The incident occurred in Kuttiyagoundanur village, under the Andiyagoundanur panchayat, where over 200 families reside. Villagers claim they have been without proper water supply for the past 15 days, despite repeatedly bringing the issue to the attention of relevant authorities.

Frustrated by the lack of action, the residents took to the streets, blocking the Udumalaipet main road with empty pots and detaining a passing government bus. The protest, which lasted for over an hour, severely disrupted traffic in the area.

Local officials from the Rural Development Department and Water Supply Department are currently engaged in negotiations with the protesting villagers to resolve the issue. The demonstrators have stated they will only withdraw their protest once proper water supply is restored to their village.

The water crisis reportedly extends beyond Kuttiyagoundanur, affecting several nearby villages including Uralpatti, Andiyagoundanur, Jakkampalayam, and Kizhavankattoor. Residents of these areas have also complained about irregular water supply.

As negotiations continue, the incident has highlighted the pressing need for improved water management and distribution in rural areas around Udumalaipet. Local authorities are under pressure to find both immediate and long-term solutions to address the water scarcity issues faced by these communities.
