Complaint Filed Against Instagram Influencers for Mocking Differently-Abled Persons

The Tamil Nadu Deaf and Dumb Association has filed a complaint with the Coimbatore District Collector against Instagram influencers Rohan Cariappa and Shaayan Bhattacharya for posting a video mocking hearing-impaired individuals.

Coimbatore: Members of the Tamil Nadu Deaf and Dumb Association have submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector, demanding action against Instagram influencers Rohan Cariappa and Shaayan Bhattacharya. The complaint stems from a video posted on Instagram that allegedly mocks and offends the hearing-impaired community.

The petitioners claim that the video features a sign language interpreter making inappropriate gestures and using offensive language under the guise of entertainment. They assert that this act deeply insults the deaf community and violates their dignity.

The association members further stated in their petition that the video violates the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, the Information Technology Act, and Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. They have urged the authorities to take appropriate action against the individuals responsible for creating and sharing the offensive content.

The incident has sparked outrage among advocacy groups for differently-abled persons, who emphasize the need for sensitivity and respect towards all communities. They stress that social media influencers have a responsibility to create content that does not marginalize or ridicule any section of society, especially vulnerable groups.

As the complaint gains attention, it highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the differently-abled community in terms of representation and respect in social media and popular culture. The authorities are expected to investigate the matter and take necessary steps to address the concerns raised by the Tamil Nadu Deaf and Dumb Association.
