The Indian Psychiatric Society, Tamil Nadu Chapter organized a 'Run for Mind' marathon in Coimbatore to raise awareness about mental health. Over 1,200 participants joined the event, which was flagged off by former Tamil Nadu DGP Ravi.

Coimbatore: The Indian Psychiatric Society, Tamil Nadu Chapter, in collaboration with Kongunadu Mananala Arakkatalai, organized a 'Run for Mind' marathon in Coimbatore on Sunday to raise awareness about mental health. The event, which saw participation from over 1,200 individuals, was flagged off by former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Ravi at VOC Grounds.

Dr. C. Paneer Selvan, President of the Tamil Nadu Psychiatric Society, addressed the press and media during the event. He highlighted the critical state of mental health in India, stating, "Nearly 10-15% of the 140 crore people in India, including children, face mental health-related issues. Unfortunately, only 10-20% of them seek medical guidance due to lack of awareness and hesitation."

Dr. Selvan further elaborated on the mental health challenges faced by the younger population. He noted that Indians under 20 years of age are experiencing mental stress and other issues due to various factors. Alarmingly, even 7% of children in India are now grappling with mental health issues.

The 'Run for Mind' marathon aimed to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about these issues. The significant turnout of over 1,200 participants demonstrated the growing recognition of mental health as a crucial aspect of overall well-being.

The event not only served as a platform for physical activity but also as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of mental health. It emphasized the need for early intervention, professional help, and community support in addressing mental health concerns.

As mental health continues to be a pressing issue in India, initiatives like the 'Run for Mind' marathon play a vital role in raising awareness and promoting a more inclusive and understanding society. The organizers hope that this event will inspire more people to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed.
