Intensive Vehicle Checks at Tamil Nadu-Kerala Border Forest Area Near Mettupalayam to Prevent Maoist Movement

Police and Forest Department conduct joint operation near Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, to check for Maoist presence and movement in the Mulli forest area along the Kerala border. Restrictions imposed on entry to Kerala through this route.

Coimbatore: The Police and Forest Department are conducting intensive checks in the Mulli forest area near Mettupalayam, Coimbatore district, along the Kerala state border. The joint operation aims to detect any potential Maoist presence or movement in the region. Currently, entry into Kerala through this route is restricted to local tribal people only.

The Mulli forest area is located along the hilly road from Mettupalayam to Pillur Dam, near the Kerala border. An existing Forest Department checkpoint in this area is now being used to monitor vehicles traveling to the Pillur Dam area and Kerala regions.

This heightened surveillance comes in the wake of recent incidents, including anti-national slogans written on the retaining walls of the Mettupalayam-Kotagiri hill road and election boycott posters found in mountainous villages in the Kerala forest area bordering Tamil Nadu. The Naxal Prevention Police are conducting a thorough investigation, suspecting possible Maoist involvement in these incidents.

Vehicle checks at the Mulli checkpoint have been intensified. Tourists are now prohibited from entering the Kerala area, which is only about 300 meters away via the Mulli route. Only tribal and local residents with proper documentation are allowed to pass through.

All vehicles heading towards the Pillur Dam area through this route are subjected to rigorous checks before being permitted to proceed. Posters featuring photographs of Maoists wanted by both Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments have been displayed at the Mulli checkpoint area, further strengthening the surveillance measures.
