Coconut Processing Halted in Negamam Due to Continuous Rainfall

Continuous rainfall in Negamam and surrounding areas has led to the accumulation of lakhs of coconuts, disrupting processing activities and affecting workers' livelihoods as of July 19.

Coimbatore: The Negamam area, known for its numerous coconut processing yards, is facing a significant setback due to persistent heavy rainfall over the past few days. The continuous downpour has brought coconut processing activities to a standstill, resulting in the accumulation of lakhs of coconuts in the region.

Negamam and its surrounding areas are home to a large number of coconut processing yards where coconuts are traditionally dehusked and dried. However, the recent spell of heavy rain has severely impacted these operations. The wet conditions have made it impossible to carry out the crucial drying process, leading to a massive backlog of unprocessed coconuts.

The disruption in coconut processing has had a ripple effect on the local economy. As of July 19, work in the coconut yards has come to a near-complete halt. This unexpected pause in operations has not only affected the coconut industry but has also left many workers without employment, adding to their financial worries.
