Two Leopards Spotted in Coimbatore's Thadagam Area: Residents Confirm Sighting with Cellphone Video

Residents of Thadagam's Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Coimbatore captured video evidence of two leopards roaming near the Western Ghats foothills, confirming the presence of the big cats in the area.

Coimbatore: The movement of wild animals has been on the rise in recent days in areas such as Perur, Thondamuthur, Narasipuram, and Thadagam, located along the Western Ghats in Coimbatore. Wild elephants have been regularly entering residential areas and agricultural lands in search of food, causing damage to crops and property.

A few months ago, a black panther and a leopard were reported to have hunted domestic animals like chickens, goats, and cattle in the area.

Last week, following reports of a mysterious animal preying on goats in Vandikaranputhur area of Thondamuthur, the Forest Department installed advanced cameras for surveillance. However, no footage was captured.

In a significant development today, residents of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Thadagam recorded a cellphone video of two leopards roaming near the foothills of the Western Ghats. This video evidence has confirmed the presence of leopards in the area, which had been a subject of speculation.

In response to the confirmed leopard sightings, the Forest Department has issued a warning to the residents in the vicinity. They have advised people not to venture out during night hours due to the increased movement of wild animals in recent times.

The department is likely to intensify its surveillance and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of both the residents and the wild animals. This incident has highlighted the growing human-wildlife conflict in the region and the need for careful management of these interactions.
