A 23-year-old guest worker from West Bengal died after being hit by a car driven by a Class XII student on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore. The speeding car caught fire after hitting the median.

Coimbatore: In a tragic incident during the early hours of Wednesday, a guest worker lost his life after being struck by a car driven by a Class XII student on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore. The speeding vehicle, after hitting the victim, collided with the road median and burst into flames.

The deceased has been identified as Akshay Bera, 23, hailing from Jamboni village in Jhargram district of West Bengal. Bera was employed in the construction of the Avinashi Road elevated corridor and was regulating traffic when the accident occurred.

The 17-year-old driver, a student at a private school in Peelamedu, had taken the car from his residence while his parents were asleep. The accident happened when he attempted to overtake a taxi and lost control of the vehicle. Construction workers engaged in the elevated corridor project rescued the student, who was trapped inside the burning car.

The Coimbatore city police have registered a case against the minor student, his father for allowing him to drive, and his grandfather who owned the car. The student sustained minor injuries, while the car was completely gutted in the fire.

Fire brigades from the Peelamedu fire station rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze. The incident has raised concerns about underage driving and the safety of workers on construction sites.
