Flood Alert Issued for Coastal Villages as Amaravathi Dam Inflow Continues to Rise

Continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Amaravathi Dam has led to increased water inflow. Public Works Department issues flood warning for nearby villages as dam nears full capacity.

Coimbatore: The Amaravathi Dam in Udumalpet, Tiruppur district, is experiencing a steady increase in water inflow due to persistent rainfall in its catchment areas. The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued a flood alert for coastal villages as the dam approaches its full capacity.

The water level in the Amaravathi Dam has reached 84.30 feet against its total capacity of 90 feet. The current inflow into the dam stands at 6,344 cubic feet per second. This surge is attributed to continuous heavy rains in the dam's catchment areas, including Pambaru, Thuvanam, Kandhalur, and Maraiyur.

Given the rising water levels and the possibility of surplus water being released at any time, the PWD has warned residents of coastal villages to move to safer locations. The alert specifically mentions villages such as Kallapuram, Rudra Palayam, Kolumam, Madathukulam, and Karathozhuvu.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation as rainfall continues in the Amaravathi catchment area. Residents in the mentioned villages and surrounding areas are advised to stay vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety.
