Wild Elephants Roam Residential Areas in Coimbatore, Residents Demand Action

Two wild elephants entered Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Coimbatore, nearly attacking residents. The incident, captured on video, has raised concerns about increasing elephant incursions into urban areas.

Coimbatore: The Thadagam, Mangkarai, and Kanuvai areas of Coimbatore district have been experiencing increased wild elephant movement recently. These elephants, venturing out from forest areas into human settlements, have been causing significant damage to agricultural lands.

On the night before last, two wild elephants entered the Thadagam Thanneer Panthal area and destroyed a thatched hut where migrant workers from northern states were staying. In a similar incident last night, two wild elephants were spotted roaming freely in the Thiruvalluvar Nagar area. During this encounter, a group of residents standing in front of a gate to observe the elephants were nearly attacked when one of the jumbos suddenly charged towards them. Fortunately, they managed to escape by quickly retreating into their homes.

Nearby residents captured this alarming incident on their mobile phones, and the footage has since been widely circulated. The video clearly shows the elephants moving through the residential area, causing panic among the locals.

These frequent intrusions by wild elephants into urban areas have sparked serious concerns among the residents. The public is now demanding that the Forest Department intensify their patrolling efforts in these areas. Additionally, they are calling for immediate measures to prevent wild elephants from entering residential zones from the nearby forest areas.

The recurring nature of these incidents has highlighted the urgent need for a long-term solution to mitigate human-elephant conflicts in the region. Residents hope that prompt action will be taken to ensure their safety while also protecting the elephants in their natural habitat.
