Leopard Spotted in Ponnegoundan Pudur: Automatic Cameras Installed for Surveillance

A leopard was spotted in Ponnegoundan Pudur near Annur, Coimbatore on July 17. Forest officials have installed automatic cameras for surveillance and warned villagers to avoid venturing out alone at night.


Coimbatore: Residents of Ponnegoundan Pudur near Annur in Coimbatore district were alarmed after a leopard was spotted in the area on July 17. The incident occurred in an agricultural garden owned by Dharmalingam, where electricity board employees were carrying out maintenance work on a power pole.

During their work, the employees noticed a peacock nesting in a hidden bush. To their shock, they saw a leopard attempting to hunt the peacock. Startled by the commotion caused by the workers, the leopard fled the scene. The employees immediately informed the garden owner about the incident, who in turn alerted the Periyanaickenpalayam Forest Department.

Forest officials quickly arrived at the location and examined the leopard's paw prints. To monitor the leopard's movements in the area, they have installed automatic cameras. The news of a leopard prowling in Ponnegoundan Pudur has caused considerable concern among the villagers.

Local residents have appealed to the Forest Department to take necessary measures to capture the leopard. In response, forest officials have initiated an investigation and are taking steps to trap the animal. They have also issued a warning to the villagers, advising them to avoid going out alone at night unnecessarily.

The Forest Department is continuing its surveillance and is expected to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of both the villagers and the wildlife in the area. The incident has highlighted the increasing instances of human-wildlife conflict in the region, prompting calls for more comprehensive measures to manage such situations.
