Two Policemen Suspended for Hoarding Seized Banned Tobacco Products

Two traffic policemen in Bhavani Kooduthurai were suspended for failing to report the seizure of 295 kg of banned tobacco products and hoarding them at a house in Veppadai, Namakkal.

Coimbatore: Two policemen from the traffic wing at Bhavani Kooduthurai have been suspended for misconduct involving the seizure of banned tobacco products. Prabhu (28) and Sivakumar (30) intercepted a van from Bengaluru on July 12 and discovered 295 kg of gutkha items worth ₹8 lakh in 27 bags.

Instead of properly seizing the vehicle and the contraband, the officers allegedly negotiated with the driver, Rajendra, and allowed him to leave. They then stored the seized gutkha at a house in Veppadai, Namakkal, without informing their superiors about the incident.

The matter came to light when Rajendra informed his employer about the encounter. The employer escalated the issue to Superintendent of Police G. Jawahar, prompting an investigation. During the inquiry, the Bhavani police recovered the banned items from the house where they were stored.

SP Jawahar conducted a thorough investigation with the two policemen. As a result of their failure to take appropriate action against the van driver and their decision to hoard the seized items, both Prabhu and Sivakumar were placed under suspension on Tuesday.

This incident highlights the importance of proper procedures and transparency in law enforcement operations, especially when dealing with banned substances. The suspension serves as a reminder of the consequences of deviating from official protocols and the significance of maintaining integrity within the police force.
