Southern Railway Boosts Parcel Traffic from Mettupalayam Station

Southern Railway enhances parcel traffic from Mettupalayam to Chennai and southern districts. New bi-weekly train to Thoothukudi starting July 19 ensures port connectivity, opening opportunities for large-scale movement of fresh produce.

Coimbatore: The Southern Railway has intensified efforts to increase parcel traffic from Mettupalayam Station to Chennai and the southern districts. This initiative aims to improve utilization of parcel capacity and enhance connectivity to key destinations.

E. Muthukumar, Chief Commercial Inspector/Parcel of Salem Division, reported that the Chennai-bound Nilgiris Express has achieved about 70% utilization of its parcel capacity. Additionally, parcel utilization is showing positive growth in the Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam weekly special train.

A significant development in this effort is the introduction of bi-weekly services to Thoothukudi, set to commence from July 19. This new service will provide the much-anticipated port connectivity, opening up new avenues for transportation of goods.

The Mettupalayam-Tuticorin train will make commercial stops at several key stations including Coimbatore, Kinattukadavu, Pollachi, Udumalpet, Palani, Oddanchathram, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Satur, and Kovilpatti. This extensive route coverage is expected to boost parcel traffic significantly.

Muthukumar highlighted the strong potential for large-scale movement of fresh vegetables, cut flowers, and fruits from the Nilgiris and surrounding areas of Mettupalayam through the Thoothukudi Port. Each train is equipped with four parcel coaches, each having a capacity of four tonnes, providing ample space for goods transportation.

In its efforts to promote parcel services, the Southern Railway has distributed flyers emphasizing the advantages of using Indian Railways for parcel movement. Furthermore, the Salem Division is exploring the possibility of transporting large-tea from Mettupalayam to various destinations, further expanding its parcel service offerings.

This push for increased parcel traffic is expected to benefit local producers and businesses, providing them with efficient and reliable transportation options for their goods to reach wider markets.
