Case Filed Against Hindu Munnani Official in Coimbatore for Controversial Social Media Posts

Coimbatore police filed a case against Jaishankar, Hindu Munnani's city secretary, for posting controversial comments on Facebook regarding temple demolitions and criticizing the government on July 15, 2023.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore police have registered a case against Jaishankar, the city secretary of Hindu Munnani, for allegedly posting controversial comments on social media platforms. The action came after the police intensified their monitoring of social media accounts for content that could potentially incite communal tensions.

On July 15, Sub-Inspector Jayabalan of Variety Hall Road police station was conducting routine surveillance of social media pages when he came across Jaishankar's Facebook posts. The posts reportedly contained contentious remarks about temple demolitions and criticism of the government, which were deemed potentially inflammatory.

Based on Jayabalan's complaint, the Variety Hall Road police station registered a case against Jaishankar under various sections of the Information Technology Act for misuse of technology. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

This is not the first time Jaishankar has been in trouble with the law. In February 2021, he was arrested by the Singanallur police for allegedly slandering Prophet Muhammad during a protest. The protest, held on February 1, 2021, at the Singanallur bus stand, was organized by Hindu Munnani to condemn the arrest of their leader Kalyanaraman.

During the protest, Jaishankar, who was then the district general secretary of Hindu Munnani, allegedly made derogatory statements about Prophet Muhammad. A video of his speech went viral, leading to protests by various Islamic organizations. They petitioned the police and district administration to take action against Jaishankar.

The Singanallur police subsequently filed a case against Jaishankar under sections 143, 341, 270, and 153 of the Indian Penal Code. He was arrested on February 6, 2021, causing a stir among Hindu Munnani members.

The recent case filed against Jaishankar highlights the ongoing efforts by the Coimbatore police to monitor and curb potentially inflammatory content on social media platforms, particularly those that could disrupt communal harmony in the city.
