Narikuravar Family Attempts Self-Immolation Outside Coimbatore Collectorate Over Property Dispute

A Narikuravar family attempted self-immolation outside the Coimbatore Collectorate, demanding action against their relative who allegedly forced them out of their own house.

Coimbatore: A tense situation unfolded outside the Coimbatore District Collector's office on Monday when a Narikuravar family attempted self-immolation, alleging that they were forcibly evicted from their own house by a relative.

Sujatha, a member of the Narikuravar community from Kullakkapalayam in Pollachi, Coimbatore district, arrived at the Collectorate with her family members. They were carrying documents proving ownership of their house and a can of kerosene. The family claimed that Vijilkumar, who had married Sujatha's younger sister in an inter-caste marriage, was forcing them to vacate their own property.

According to Sujatha, Vijilkumar had been harassing them to leave the house, despite it being rightfully theirs. Unable to withstand the pressure, the family had temporarily moved out and was staying at a bus stand. They had also filed a complaint with the local police station regarding the issue.

Frustrated with the lack of action, the family decided to take the drastic step of attempting self-immolation to draw attention to their plight. As they poured kerosene on themselves, alert police personnel stationed at the Collectorate quickly intervened. They doused the family with water, preventing a potential tragedy.

The incident caused momentary panic and commotion in front of the Collector's office. Police officials have taken the family into custody and are investigating the matter. The authorities have assured the family that their grievances will be looked into and appropriate action will be taken.
