Coimbatore District Police Seize Tobacco Products in Pollachi Area

Coimbatore District Police conducted a special operation in Pollachi, seizing 60.4 kg of banned tobacco products and arresting two individuals. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to create a drug-free Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: In a significant crackdown on illegal tobacco trade, the Coimbatore District Police seized a substantial quantity of banned tobacco products in the Pollachi area on July 14, 2024. The operation, carried out under the direction of District Superintendent of Police Badri Narayanan, IPS, is part of an ongoing initiative to create a drug-free Coimbatore.

Acting on a tip-off about the sale of banned tobacco products, a special team of the district police conducted a vehicle check near Nallur Bus Stop in Pollachi West police station limits. During the inspection, they intercepted a four-wheeler and apprehended two individuals: Sappanimuthu (30), son of Chithirai from Pollachi, and Varghese Raj (36), son of Sathyaraj from Kinathukadavu.

The police seized approximately 60.4 kilograms of banned tobacco products from the duo, along with the four-wheeler used for transportation. The arrested individuals were subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

This operation is part of a larger crackdown on drug and tobacco sales in the Coimbatore district. Since May 1, 2024, the district police have conducted special raids resulting in the registration of 114 cases against 130 individuals involved in the sale of banned tobacco products. These efforts have led to the confiscation of about 3,394.96 kilograms of prohibited tobacco items.

Superintendent of Police Badri Narayanan has issued a stern warning that stringent legal action will continue to be taken against those involved in the sale of intoxicants or any activities that disrupt law and order.

The police have urged the public to report any information about such illegal activities without hesitation. Citizens can contact the Coimbatore District Police Control Room at 94981-81212 or send information via WhatsApp to 77081-00100. The police have assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
