Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Introduces New Diploma Courses

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Directorate of Open and Distance Learning launches new diploma courses in protected cultivation, hydroponics, smart farming, and drone technology for 2023, expanding its agricultural education offerings.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has expanded its educational offerings through the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning by introducing new diploma courses this year. These courses aim to enhance the technical knowledge and experience of farmers, women, youth, school dropouts, entrepreneurs, and those interested in starting small businesses in rural areas.

The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning was established in 2005 under TNAU to provide accessible education in agriculture and related fields. It currently offers 44 six-month certificate courses, including popular programs in coconut cultivation techniques, mushroom cultivation, medicinal crops, nursery techniques for horticultural crops, modern sugarcane cultivation methods, solid waste and vermicompost production, organic farming, sericulture, bread and chocolate making, beekeeping, and ornamental gardening.

For those unable to attend in-person training sessions, the directorate offers online courses in English on topics such as ornamental gardening, medicinal and aromatic crop production, vermicomposting, home and terrace gardening, pest and disease management in home gardens, and inputs for organic farming. These courses can be accessed from anywhere in the country.

The "Agricultural Input Diploma Course" is a specialized program for fertilizer, seed, and pesticide dealers to obtain licenses. This diploma course has been successfully running since its inception in 2015.

Starting this year, the directorate has announced the introduction of new diploma courses focusing on cutting-edge agricultural technologies. These include:

1. Protected Cultivation Techniques for Horticultural Crops

2. Hydroponics Cultivation of Horticultural Crops

3. Smart Farming with Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

4. Drone Technology in Agriculture

These new courses reflect TNAU's commitment to incorporating modern technologies into agricultural education and keeping pace with the evolving needs of the farming sector.
