Coimbatore Corporation Reclaims ₹3 crore Worth Encroached OSR Site After 35 Years

Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation reclaimed an Open Space Reserve site in Amman Nagar after 35 years of encroachment. The site, valued at ₹3 crore, was fenced and a notice board installed following a Madras High Court dismissal.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has successfully reclaimed an Open Space Reserve (OSR) site in Amman Nagar (ward 85) on Thursday, putting an end to a 35-year-long encroachment issue. This action came after the Madras High Court dismissed a long-pending case, allowing the civic body to proceed with the reclamation of the reserve site, which is valued at ₹3 crore.

The Corporation promptly fenced the land and installed a notice board to mark the reclaimed area. The site was originally approved by the Urban Development Authority in 1988, comprising 2.77 acres divided into 31 plots. Of this, 13,138 square feet (30 cents) was allocated for a park and children's playground.

Over the years, the OSR land had been encroached upon and was being used as a 30-foot access road for a nearby residential layout falling under the Vellalore Town Panchayat. The Amman Nagar Residents Welfare Association had filed a petition to remove the encroachment and secure the park area with fencing.

In response to the Corporation's actions, the encroachers had filed a lawsuit in the Madras High Court. However, the court dismissed both cases, paving the way for the Coimbatore Corporation to reclaim the land.

This reclamation marks a significant victory for the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in its efforts to preserve and protect public spaces. The recovery of this OSR site after more than three decades demonstrates the Corporation's commitment to upholding urban planning regulations and ensuring that designated open spaces are available for public use as originally intended.
