TNAU Celebrates Foundation Day and Announces New Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology

TNAU in Coimbatore announced the establishment of a new Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology. Celebrated its 54th Foundation Day, highlighting achievements and new academic and industrial collaborations.


Coimbatore: During its 54th Foundation Day celebration, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Biotechnology. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor V. Geethalakshmi, who outlined the centre's focus on advancing agricultural practices through biotechnology. The CoE, with a projected budget of ₹435 crore, will drive research on bio-inputs essential for sustainable agriculture across Tamil Nadu.

It will support 100 startups dedicated to agri-biological products production and distribution. Accompanied by NABARD Chairman K.V. Shaji and former Vice-Chancellors, the event highlighted TNAU's pivotal achievements. The university has increased student intake by 10% annually and has implemented a Blended Learning System to standardize education across its campuses.

Prof. Geethalakshmi noted TNAU's top ranking among State Agricultural Universities and its prominence in national examinations, where its students secured 26% of the seats. The university has also enhanced research support, offering fellowships of upto ₹20,000 to all PG and Ph.D. scholars. Partnerships with 150 agricultural industries aim to boost students' employable skills, with successful job placements for undergraduate and diploma students in 2023.

Awards for academic and research excellence were also conferred during the event, with the Agricultural College and Research Institutes at Coimbatore and other locations receiving top honors.
