Coimbatore: Heavy rains have led to sudden floods in the rivers around Valparai, including the Koolangal River. Despite warnings and restrictions imposed by local authorities, tourists and locals are found swimming and playing in the river, oblivious to the dangers of sudden water level rise.
Authorities have banned entering rivers like Koolangal, Nallakathu, Nadumalai, Vellamalai Tunnel, Gejamudi River, Solaiyar Pirla Falls, Solaiyar Dam River, and Karumalai Iraichipaarai River. This action comes after several incidents where the swift rise in water level swept unaware individuals downstream, posing significant risks.
During periods of lesser rains in the Valparai area, the adjacent forest regions receive heavy rainfall, causing flash floods in the rivers. This discrepancy leads to unsafe conditions, mostly unrecognized by visitors and locals enjoying the water. Despite these prohibitions, it is reported that some business operators in the absence of police, illegally allow tourists to enter for swimming and recreational purposes in these areas.
Tourists claim that these measures are ignored, and warn against the potential dangers of such negligent behavior. Community activists and safety advocates are urging for stronger enforcement of the bans, especially during the weekends when the influx of visitors is the highest. They stress the importance of safeguarding all involved by adhering strictly to the safety regulations established to prevent accidents.
Currently, there is a demand from tourists for the regulation of businesses operating illegally near the river, proposing that they only be allowed to operate on Saturdays and Sundays. Removing these unlawfully set-up shops and reinforcing the rules about not entering or swimming in the river are among the primary concerns brought forward by local activists.
