Coimbatore: On May 17, under the aegis of the May 17 Movement, a significant conference titled "Coimbatore's Forgotten Freedom Fight" was organized at the Bread Shop Grounds in Peelamedu.

The conference, led by the coordinator of the May 17 Movement, Thirumurugan Gandhi, was attended by prominent figures such as Ku. Ramakiruttinan, the Secretary General of Dravidar Kazhagam, and administrators from various parties. The event began with a solemn tribute to the freedom fighters, where lamps were lit to honor their valor and sacrifices.

The speakers discussed the early onset of the freedom struggle, predating Gandhi, highlighting how the Indian identity and the term 'Hindu' were shaped significantly prior to British rule. Ku. Ramakiruttinan emphasized the area's historical context, noting it was called Tipu Sultan's Fort in Kottaimedu once under British control. He also discussed the regional opposition in Coimbatore to Hindi imposition, illustrating a continued tradition of linguistic pride.

Thirumurugan Gandhi delivered a powerful speech, reiterating the need to recognize the diverse contributions to India’s freedom, including the support from Kerala. He shed light on the strategic plots formulated in regions like Dharapuram, Sathyamangalam, and Kothagiri to oust the British, and mentioned plans of attacks from hill areas like Marudhamalai.

Highlighting contemporary issues, he criticized certain segments for not acknowledging the broad spectrum of Indian freedom fighters, choosing instead to celebrate controversial figures. Concluding, Thirumurugan Gandhi called for unity among Tamils, urging them to join the May 17 Movement to continue fighting for regional and cultural integrity.
