District-Level Training for Numeracy and Literacy Facilitators in Coimbatore

A two-day training session for district-level numeracy and literacy advisors was held in Thirumurthy Nagar, focusing on enhancing state-wide educational standards.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu State Education Department, under the guidance of the State Institute for Educational Research and Training, conducted a detailed training program on June 20th and 21st for numeracy and literacy at the District Teacher Training and Education Institute in Thirumurthy Nagar. The initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Ilankovan, the head of the institute, who emphasized the importance of taking this training to a national level.

Director of In-Service Training, Senior Lecturer Bobby Indira, welcomed the efforts and outlined the objectives, while Deputy Director Vimala Devi and Senior Lecturer in Educational Technology, Subramani, were also prominent figures during the sessions.

The training was part of the "Numeracy and Literacy" program introduced for grades four and five in the academic year 2023-24, which aims to implement various teaching methods based on educators' and scholars' feedback in each academic term. It was reported that these new methodologies have significantly varied the instructional approaches.

In September 2023, assessments conducted across Tamil Nadu proved the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing students’ numeracy and literacy skills, identifying areas requiring improvement and discussing enhancements in those skills.

During these sessions, innovative ideas were introduced in subjects such as Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. Approximately 40 teachers from seven unions participated in this robust training, which also demonstrated usage of technology like smart boards and tablets to simplify concepts for students.

Interactive discussions, narrative teaching, and tech-driven methodologies were employed to deliver these lessons effectively. Local educators like Kannapiran from Irakalpavi and Thilagavathi, head from Ayikavoundanpalayam, also contributed with detailed explanations and practical demonstrations.

This training highlighted the ongoing commitment to enhancing teaching standards and educational outcomes in Coimbatore.
