Coimbatore to Establish 20 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Across the City

Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and Tata Power have initiated the installation of 20 electric vehicle charging stations in various locations across Coimbatore to support the increasing use of electric vehicles.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore is gearing up for a greener future with the introduction of 20 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, a project initiated by Coimbatore Municipal Corporation in partnership with Tata Power Ltd., Mumbai. This move is aimed at addressing the growing demand for electric vehicles in the city.

According to the statistics, India has seen a significant increase in EV sales, with approximately 38.5 lakh units sold last financial year. This includes about 95% two-wheelers and 1.67 lakh four-wheelers, along with 7,700 electric buses across the country. Notably, nearly 40% of the four-wheel EVs and around 70% of the two-wheeler EVs sold in India are manufactured in Tamil Nadu.

The first charging station is currently being installed at V.O.C. Park in Coimbatore under the contract signed by Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and Tata Power in April last year. These stations will be equipped with Tata’s EZ Charge setup, which can provide up to 80% charge in just one hour.

Overall, the 20 planned charging stations will also feature multiple locations including three in R.S. Puram, and two each in Avinashi Road, V.O.C. Park, Walayar, and Kallapatty regions. Other areas like Saravanampatti near Brookfields, Singanallur, Tidel Park, Gandhipuram Cross Cut Road, Periyakulam, and Thudiyalur will each host one charging station.
