Methanol-laced Liquor Tragedy in Kallakurichi: Financial Aid and Intense Investigation Announced by CM Stalin

Methanol-laced liquor consumed in Karunapuram Colony, Kallakurichi has resulted in 34 deaths. CM announced financial aid, condolences, and has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.



Coimbatore: The tragic incident where 34 individuals lost their lives after consuming methanol-laced liquor in Karunapuram Colony, Kallakurichi has led to a major outcry. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced financial relief and stern action against those responsible.

Expressing deep distress over the news, the Chief Minister assured that affected families and those currently under treatment would receive special medical care. Financial assistance of ten lakhs to the families of the deceased and fifty thousand for medical expenses to those under treatment has been announced. Ministers including A.V. Velu (Highways and Minor Ports) and Ma Subramanian (Medical and Family Welfare) were immediately dispatched to Kallakurichi to offer condolences and supervise relief measures.

To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the government has set up a commission, headed by retired High Court Justice P. Gokuldas. Additionally, severe actions including arrests have been made concerning individuals linked to the production and sale of the toxic liquor. Authorities are also mandated to identify the sources of methanol supply involved in the liquor production.

Further, CM Stalin has ordered an in-depth probe by the CBCID, transferring district officials and promising stringent prevention measures to avert such tragedies in the future. This is to uphold health and safety standards across the state and bring justice to the affected families.
