Kallakurichi Tragedy Claims 33 Lives Due to Spurious Liquor Consumption; Collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath transferred

In Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district, 33 individuals died and 15 are critical after consuming illicit liquor. Government action includes official suspensions and arrests related to the incident.


Coimbatore: In a devastating incident in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district, at least 33 people have perished after consuming illicitly distilled liquor. An additional 15 victims are in a critical condition, with a total of 109 individuals affected receiving medical treatment. The affected are currently being treated at several facilities including Kallakurichi Government Medical College, JIPMER Puducherry, and Salem Government Hospital.


Following the tragedy, significant administrative actions were taken. Kallakurichi District Collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath who was earlier the collector in Coimbatore, has been transferred, and the District Superintendent of Police has been suspended. These measures reflect the government's stern approach towards tackling the incident, which has now been handed over to the CB-CID for further investigation.


On the enforcement front, the district police have made arrests in connection to the case. A suspect, identified as Kannukutty aged 49, has been apprehended for allegedly supplying the fatal liquor. Police reports indicate that about 200 liters of the illicit substance, which was contaminated with methanol, was confiscated from his possession.


A detailed investigation is under way, and the newly-appointed Kallakurichi Collector MS Prashanth assured that all medical facilities are prepared to handle the emergency with adequate resources including ambulances, and additional medical personnel being deployed.


The tragic incident has elicited a strong reaction from political leaders as well. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his dismay on social media, outlining the immediate steps taken against those involved and underscoring the importance of public vigilance to prevent such disasters in the future. Opposition leader E Palaniswami has also announced plans to visit the grieving families, indicating the high political and social stakes of the event.
