Pollachi Livestock Market Witnesses High Sales Ahead of Bakrid Festival

The Pollachi cattle market, a significant livestock market in South India, saw robust sales ahead of the Bakrid festival. Merchants from various states participated in the event, boosting trade.


Coimbatore: Ahead of the upcoming Bakrid festival, the Pollachi cattle market witnessed a significant increase in cattle sales. The market, known to be one of the largest livestock markets in South India, operates every Tuesday and Thursday, offering cows on Tuesdays and both goats and cows on Thursdays.

This time, in anticipation of Bakrid on June 17th, the market was exceptionally vibrant, with more than 10,000 cattle and buffaloes brought for sale from different Indian states including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra, as well as from various districts within Tamil Nadu. The influx of cattle in the recent months averaged a trade worth Rs. 2 crores on market days.

On this occasion, over 350 merchants, including a high number from Kerala, visited the market. Their participation led to brisk business starting early morning on June 13th, with significant numbers of cattle and buffaloes bought. This has led to an anticipated increase in sales up to Rs. 3 crores for the day, highlighting the market's annual significance in handling large volumes of livestock sales.
