Coimbatore:

The Coimbatore city corporation is set to construct an additional bus stand at Ukkadam, which will be connected to the existing one by a subway. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The state government has allocated ₹20 crore to establish the new bus stand, revamp the existing one, and construct the subway.

Corporation commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran mentioned that the subway is included in the project to assist commuters, who would otherwise have to cross the busy road. Currently, with the state highways department having demolished the compound wall, commercial establishments, and platforms at the existing bus stand to facilitate the Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover work, commuters are forced to wait for buses in the open.

"We are going to revamp and modernize the bus stand. We have 2.5 acres of vacant land opposite the Ukkadam police station. The new bus stand will come up there with many facilities for the passengers," said the corporation commissioner.

The existing bus stand handles buses from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and private mofussil buses to destinations such as Palani, Udumalpet, Pollachi, Palakkad, Thrissur, and other parts of Kerala. The new bus terminal will also accommodate mofussil buses to neighboring districts and cities in Kerala. "The two bus stands together will help reduce traffic congestion in the area in the future," he added.

Commissioner Prabhakaran explained that the bus stands would be located on either side of the National Highways road, making it difficult for commuters to cross the busy road. Hence, the subway will connect the two bus terminals, allowing people to avoid waiting on the roadside to cross the highway.

On Saturday, June 8, the corporation commissioner inspected the existing bus terminal along with assistant divisional engineer (highways) Manivannan and other corporation officials. "We are preparing a detailed project report. Our plan is to commence the project as early as possible," he stated.
