Five Arrested Over Child Trafficking in Coimbatore

Five individuals were arrested in Sulur, Coimbatore, for their involvement in a child sale network. Vijayan, a local farmer, was enticed to buy a child, leading to an extensive police investigation.

Coimbatore: In a shocking case unfolding in Sulur, five individuals including a couple from Bihar, have been arrested for their involvement in the alleged sale of a newborn girl. Vijayan, a native of Jimmanaickenpalayam, was targeted by the couple, Anjali and Mahesh Kumar, who manage a local eat’s establishment. They promised him a baby girl, complete with necessary legal documents, for a sum of Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

Following an agreement, Anjali communicated the plan to her mother, Poonam Devi, in Bihar, who, along with her younger daughter, Megha Kumari, managed to transport a 15-day-old infant girl to Sulur. The transaction was almost through, with Vijayan already having paid Rs. 1.8 lakhs, with Rs. 70,000 remaining.

A local social activist, upon discovering the ongoing deal, alerted Childline. The Childline team quickly confirmed the illegal transaction and further investigations led to the arrest of the involved parties. Notably, Anjali and Mahesh Kumar had previously promised to sell another child to a truck driver from Andhra Pradesh for Rs. 5 lakhs, indicating an organized crime network.

Further investigations also revealed that Poonam Devi and Megha Kumari had acquired the baby for a nominal sum from an impoverished couple in Bihar, citing their inability to sustain her. The detained couple admitted to their crimes during questioning.

The Child Welfare Committee has now taken custody of the recovered infants, and the arrested individuals are facing charges, with further investigations ongoing to check for more such transactions in the region.
