Efforts to Reunite Baby Elephant with Mother Near Marudamalai

In Marudamalai foothills managed by Coimbatore Forest Department, officers are intensifying efforts to reunite a four-month-old male elephant calf with its mother after a separation.

Coimbatore: The Forest Department in Marudamalai, near Coimbatore, has intensified operations to reunite a baby elephant with its mother. During routine patrol a few days ago, forest workers heard continuous elephant calls near the foothills and investigated the area. They discovered a female elephant appearing weak along with a calf. The health of the mother elephant was compromised, and it was staying close to the male calf, observed the team.

The forest workers provided the necessary medical treatments to the ailing elephant. Four-month-old elephant calf ventured briefly into the jungle, mingling with a wild herd but returned to the vicinity of the injured mother. Upon the mother's health improvement, using a crane, the elephant was carefully lifted and continuously treated for five days. Following the recovery, forest officials returned the mother elephant to the wild.

Meanwhile, it was reported today that the young calf had strayed into a private cardamom plantation in the Kuppepalayam area, separated from its mother. Upon receiving the information, the Forest Department staff launched a rescue operation to capture the calf and are now trying to safely return it to its mother, who is located nearby. The efforts to reunite the calf with its mother are ongoing, with hopes for a successful reuniting in their natural habitat.
