Protest Against Auction of Sivanmalai Temple-Owned Agricultural Land

Farmers clashed with police at Kangeyam near Tirupur, opposing the auction of agricultural lands owned by Sivanmalai Subramaniya Swami Temple. These lands have been farmed by locals for generations.

Coimbatore: Tensions flared at Kangeyam, near Tirupur, as local farmers resisted the auction of agricultural lands traditionally cultivated under the management of Sivanmalai Subramaniya Swami Temple. For generations, these plots have been farmed by the same families. Announced suddenly by officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the auction faced strong resistance.

The farmers laid siege to the village administrative office even before the auction could commence. Police were deployed to control the situation, allowing only 15 individuals inside the temple's upper hall where the auction attempt was made. However, farmers broke through the barriers and shouted slogans at the auction site, leading to skirmishes between them and the police.

The incident has caught the attention of local leaders and activists, questioning the promise fulfillment by political figures like Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin and others, voiced particularly by female farmers at the site. The ongoing protest inside the Endowments Department office and the subsequent impact on public visits for temple darshan highlight the escalating situation in the Sivanmalai area.
