Protests in Dharapuram Against Dam Construction on Amaravathi River

In Dharapuram, protests erupted near the Anna Statue against the construction of a check dam across the Chilanthai stream of the Amaravathi dam, which activists claim threatens irrigation and drinking water facilities.

Coimbatore: The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s Agricultural Protection Movement, spearheaded by Eastern District Secretary Oviyar Minnal and Deputy Secretary Velu Sivakumar, staged a demonstration in Dharapuram near the Anna Statue. The protest was against an ongoing dam project initiated by the Kerala government, which they allege will significantly cut down the water flow to Tamil Nadu's crucial Amaravathi dam. This dam is instrumental in supplying water to 55,000 acres of directly irrigated land and another 25,000 acres indirectly, besides supporting 110 essential drinking water schemes.

Protesters demanded immediate cessation of the dam construction, arguing that it poses a severe threat to the water supply affecting both agriculture and drinking water facilities in the region. Gathered from various parts including Udumalai, Madathukulam, and Karur, over 100 members from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and various agricultural organizations vocally condemned both the Kerala and Central governments. Echoing the demands for preserving their water rights, they have called for solidarity among locals to oppose the construction vigorously.
