Meeting on Plastic Ban Held Under the Chairmanship of Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati

A district-level committee meeting on the ban of single-use plastics was held at Coimbatore District Collector's office on 24 May 2024, chaired by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati.

Coimbatore: A crucial meeting focusing on the ban of single-use plastic products was conducted at the Coimbatore District Collector's conference hall on 24 May 2024. The session was led by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, IAS.

It was attended by key officials including R. Chandrasekaran, Environmental Engineer for South Coimbatore, municipal commissioners, town panchayat officers, and other government officials.

The meeting emphasized the prohibition of manufacturing, storing, distributing, selling, and using various single-use plastic items like plastic cups, all sizes and types of plastic bags, non-woven plastic bags, plastic-coated paper plates, plastic tumblers, thermocol cups, plastic plates used for food packing, water pouches/bags, plastic straws, and plastic flags.

Violation of this ban in municipal, town panchayat, and village regions is legally punishable. Regular inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance among retailers. Confiscated prohibited plastic items will be sent to cement factories for use as fuel.

Under Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s initiatives, numerous awareness activities are being organized across the district including massive awareness rallies, social media campaigns, installments of banners on national highways, and distribution of flyers and short films.

The Forest Department along with concerned officials will also supervise the use of banned plastic products by tourists in Valparai, ensuring environmental regulations are followed. Measures are also proposed to avoid the sale of bottled water and promote the use of water ATMs in key tourist spots.

Multiple initiatives are in place to discourage the use of plastic bags, including the introduction of 'Yellow Bag' schemes and ATMs for carrying bags within daily markets, ensuring effective waste management and recycling of non-biodegradable waste.

The District Collector stressed the importance of public cooperation in adhering to these bans to preserve a clean environment for future generations.
