Concerns Rise as Contaminated Water Overflows from Noyyal River Check Dam in Coimbatore

Recently, heavily contaminated water was seen overflowing from a check dam on the Noyyal River near Aathupalam in Coimbatore, raising fears of disease spread due to chemical waste and foul smell in the area.

Coimbatore: The consistent rainfall in Coimbatore, especially in the catchments of the Western Ghats, has led to increased water flow in the Noyyal River.

However, this has also resulted in the overflow of contaminated water, mixed with industrial chemicals, from the check dam near Aathupalam and Kalavai area, which is a significant concern for local sanitation and health.

The Noyyal River, historically a vital water source for agriculture, has been plagued by pollution due to unchecked industrial waste from nearby dyeing factories and inefficient waste management systems. The contaminated water currently overflowing carries froth and a severe stench, hinting at the high level of pollution that could lead to disease outbreaks in nearby communities.

Local environmentalists and health officials are alarmed and urging immediate action to address the pollution. Measures to clean the river and prevent further contamination are being demanded to safeguard the health of the residents and the overall environmental integrity of the region.
