11th Annual Rekla Race Held in Dharapuram Amid Local Festivities

The 11th annual Rekla race was organized in Dharapuram, marking the Kalaignar Centenary Festival and the Kaumariamman Temple festival, with many local dignitaries attending.


Coimbatore: In a festive display of tradition and competition, the 11th annual Rekla race was held in Dharapuram, organized by the Uzhavan Rekla Group. The event coincided with the Kalaignar Centenary Festival by DMK's Perur Chinakkampalayam union and the Kaumariamman Temple festival. The race saw participation from roughly 290 rekla carts, which raced across 200 meters and 300 meters categories, cheered on by a large gathering of locals.


The race started early morning and continued till late afternoon, witnessing impressive speeds and competitive spirit among the participants. It drew participants from various regions including Tirupur, Pollachi, Coimbatore, Anaimalai, Udumalaipettai, Erode, Karur, and Dindigul. Awards and trophies were distributed to the fastest rekla owners, with winners in the 200 meters category and the 300 meters category receiving a gold coin and a commemorative trophy.


DMK union secretary S.V. Senthilkumar chaired the event, with Perur Chinakkampalayam union secretary Panneerselvam also present, highlighting the event's significance in local culture. The arrangements were adeptly handled by the Rekla group ensuring a smooth conduct of the races throughout the day.
