In Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, a drunk private bus driver reversing carelessly caused the death of a young man between two buses, leading to public outrage and police conducting sobriety checks on drivers.

Coimbatore: The Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand, a major hub functioning routes to rural and other urban areas of Coimbatore, became the scene of a tragic accident yesterday where a youth lost his life due to a careless maneuver by an intoxicated private bus driver. The incident occurred when the driver, under the influence of alcohol, reversed his bus without noticing the surroundings, pinning a young man fatally between two vehicles.

Following the accident, enraged locals and fellow drivers apprehended the responsible driver and physically assaulted him in retaliation for his reckless behaviour. This incident highlighted the recurrent issue of safety negligence by some drivers who operate vehicles under the influence.

In the aftermath, today, Coimbatore City Traffic Police arrived at the Gandhipuram bus station to conduct comprehensive checks on both government and private bus drivers to ascertain if they were operating their vehicles while intoxicated. The drivers were systematically stopped and tested to ensure compliance with safety norms and prevent such grievous incidents.

This proactive enforcement by the police aims to deter drivers from consuming alcohol before duties and ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians alike.
